yeah...he was annoying, but if you had 2 autoguns, that made it much faster, just shoot his head, Gryphon is predictable enough. I've seen a JP time of 10:59 on C3 and most JP average 13-15 mins so it can be done fast.

It is better to play with 4 people but u can play with 2-4 people
indeed, but offline c-mode is difficult anyway because of the split screen and inability to see EXACTLY how much HP and TP you have. That in itself plays a big role when you TA online, you need to know exact numbers because experts at C-mode know exactly how much damage monsters deal on a challenge per hit and know when to waste a mate. When you're offline, you don't get that luxury and you have to eyeball it (or get used to measuring the HP bar). It is far easier to communicate though, so that helps a lot.
