FF7 easily, it has the best playability the best characters and the best story. The only game i can think of with a better story is Star Ocean TTEOT.
Personally, I'd say final fantasy X, I just loved the story line and the characters. Aurons the greatest.
i like all the FF games played. I can't really say which one is best cos i like them equally. how ever my fave characters are:

The best FF series I've played is FF6. I love the characters in it (especially Sabin, Cyan and Gau) the plots cliche (but what plot isnt?)
the music for it is awsome, and the few subplots you can do are great, I just love this game!

I sort of liked 1 and 6. 7 was the start of the "good" final fantasy games so i would go with 1, 6 and 6
i gota say nine having played the majority of the ff series apart from X-2(cuz my ps2 busted!!) and eight (i just avoided it reasons lost in sands of time) i luv bahamut he looks so awsome in it!! and the music in the final 2 battles is ace!!
