He is a bit of a jerk at the first but IMO his char gets better as you advance through the game.

I like Zell he's a pretty good fighter and he can fight bare handed unlike Squall and the others who need there weapons to fight.

I know that, but still they put all of their faith into Zell. Zell the annoying clown in the game and you know that he was probly thinking about not going back to give them their weapons. In FF7 everyone had their materia stolen by Yuffie they were still able to fight without them and that's why I think Zell is better than the others.
