I just saw this movie today, after arriving on the big screen last Wednesday (June 29th). You know, a good film can be real tough to find. However, all the same, they are out there at every turn.
Let me start by saying that Spielberg is a genius. Some people may be thinking, "oh crap..not another alien movie about them coming, destroying a couple towns, then being destroyed themselves". Nah-uh. No, sir. That's not what this movie is. This particular movie moves far past your typical realm of martian flicks. The story is developed in a manner that outdoes the well-known movies of our past, and you get to know the characters better. Speaking of characters ...
The cast chosen, being the two main characters, Tom Cruise (father) and Dakota Fanning (daughter), of course, was a perfect match. I am fond of Dakota Fanning. There's just something about her that makes you know that she's the kind of actress that is going to be big. Mega big, especially after her movies already including Hide & Seek.
Moving onto the suspense aspect of WotW. The truth be told, you cannot ask for much more suspense out of a movie any day of the week. While watching it, you feel the way that the characters do: where are we supposed to run next? is a question you will likely be asking yourself, as if the whole thing is real. The suspense is continually building throughout the movie, and can nearly come to the point of being frightening (hence the 14A rating in Canada, anyway). The rest speaks for itself.
The aliens and effects were extremely well done. Throughout, you mainly see giant machines rather than actual aliens trotting around the globe. But, I'll let you see exactly what goes down for yourself.
If you don't get out of the house to see this movie in theatres, be sure to rent it as soon as it comes on video. Or, in some way or another, just see it!
DE's Rating: 5 kernels of popcorn out of 5
Truly,
Double Edge
