Basically you raced around a dirt track with obsticals. Around the edges of the course was red and white borders.

Well, if you belive me, Square did a racing game before Final Fantasy that, i believe, was the precursor to the basic physicis engine. You'd actually skid off the road if you took a turn too fast!
Anyway, the game was called Rad Racer, but I can't seem to find a screen shot of it.

My favourite was this really lame amiga game that basically involved little race cars going around a circuit and you could just drive like a maniac and smash into them, just for fun. Don't even think of asking me for a name on that one though, really testing my memory now! :S
lol, them pictures look like damn gd graphics, but they may just be cause i decided to get out my Atari 2600....
The car racing genre was probably popular early on with programers because it was easy to make the simple shape of a car go around a top down viewed track, lol.
I liked the buggies in Rock N' Roll Racing for Genesis & SNES.
