On the Xbox (not sure about PC version) you do not need Doom 3 to play Doom 3 RoE as RoE is a different game. The campaign story in RoE takes place 2 years after Doom 3's campaign story. RoE has improved multiplayer, a couple new weapons, and a totally new campaign mode. On the down side it has no co-op mode which is one of the best features of Doom 3.

Ok, since this is in the Xbox section I'm guessing you have the xbox version. You can play the xbox online without a credit card just not on Live. You can play on Xlink or XBConnect for free, no CC needed. Online play is lame though as it's only 4 people per map and all the maps are small.
