If you mean the Hero and Dark forms of the Chaos Chao, then yes you will need to make your Chao play with at least one of every animal, then pet with the appropriate character to make the Chao change allegances.
If you mean the original Hero and Dark Chao (i.e. not Chaos) then just pet. Animals are not needed to make an adult.
Ok for a minute there I was abit confused
i miss my old chao, i deleted them because they were all chaos chao and all of them were at age 20+. They all had their levels at 99. My strongest chao was named Espio. All of his stat except for stamina were above 5,000!
I just got my first hero chao oh man this is sweet
