The company described the DS Lite as a "premium" product which will be offered alongside the original version. With the current model also retailing for around £100 at the moment, it seems hard the justify the 'premium' tag if Nintendo isn't anticipating a DS price cut or limited availability of the DS Lite.
The new model is lighter and smaller than its predecessor and features an improved display. It plays all existing DS games which, by the DS Lite's launch, will have been joined by Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? and Nintendogs Dalmatian and Friends Edition.
New Super Mario Bros. follows on 30 June, with Electroplankton and Big Brain Academy coming on 7 July, Nintendo said. ®

Well at least this time Nintendo have compensated us somewhat here in Europe. BLACK DS lite, ufcking gorgeous. Nuff said.
Why do so many people but new versions,if they do the exact same thing as the original?
1) My gf wants a DS but not the Lite
2) The lite has a brighter screen, better battery life and is lighter.

Plenty of reasons. Some people wanted a DS recently but they rather wait for the lite to release. Other people might sell their original DS's at a pawn shop and use a little bit of spare cash to buy the newer version, because they are rich bastards >_>.
Or in my case, I messed up on mario kart too much so i ripped my DS in half (no joke ._.)... it is only connected by one support thingy now that holds the Top screen up so i can't keep the top screen from falling down. I have tried super glue, and ductape.
On a side note,
I am happy US with have the glossy white one, that is the one i wanted. Too many people will have the black one, and it will look like a PSP, pfft.
I hope no one else got angry at their DS!
I'm fine sticking with good old silver for now. If the technology hasn't advanced and I haven't broken what I have I'm fine with my regular DS (plus my regular DS is old and can have certain 3rd party installations *wink wink nudge nudge*
