Junon Wrote:Why shouldnt I be able to run it in maximum? I have a PC that should be able to run it in full mode - thats why I spent alot of money purchasing a powerful PC afterall. Poor programming/Port of the game is no excuse. Although I have seen the post on the official PSU Boards that they will be looking to fix this issue, so for now disregard this comment.
True as it may be... I'm just saying not to bash it so badly when it runs perfectly fine at a very, very slight cost of eye candy. I know the port wasn't done too well, but when it's mainly eye-candy being the only thing that's suffering it's hardly a problem.

Junon Wrote:Apolgies, I have perhaps not explained my point correctly. The graphics aren't bad, infact some of it is rather nice. But I mean I was a little dissapointed with the design of the levels. In my mention of CCA in Episode II, its the amount of detail that went into it that I loved, such as the water effects, how you went from inside the jungle to the top of the huge waterfall, the lush huge open beach and the view from the mountains etc... I have yet to see something as vissualy impressive on the whole as this in PSU. But mostly so far, I havent found the gameplay to be particularly "Fun" either.

Although I will admit, there are some areas which I have not visited, but from what I have seen so far, there hasn't been a particular place which has made me go "Wow!".
Neudaiz is definitely the planet with the most detail at the moment. From the crisp mountain fields, to the contaminated bombardment of these fields, to the swampy marsh-lands and even to the inside of a complicated temple.

Parum is a bit of an eye-sore compared to everywhere else though... you could see some of Sega's "templated areas" as they often used in PSO, such as every single entrance to under-ground caves. Could've used a bit more variety... Tongue

Junon Wrote:After I had first played PSU for about 5 minutes, I thought "Damn, I need a Gamepad". But why release a game on PC and not take full advantage of the peripherals that are available on it, namely; the mouse! I wish you could set Mates/Moon Atomizers to number 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 etc, as with PSO:BB. I'm sure I can get used to it with time. However, I still feel that it is very un-user-friendly. I think people coming into this game will have a much harder time getting to grips with the controls, than that of people who have played PSO in the past - They should have taken this into consideration when designing the game.
Sega laziness at its best right there. Mouse support I could care less about, but the hot-keys would've been nice... the ONLY back-up I can give them for this is that adding those keys would give PC players an advantage over PS2 players IF and only if, the PC player also has a gamepad. (Mine is irronically a replica of a PS2 controller... just bigger so it actually fits my paws). Even though it's inconvenient, there's also the issue of fairness between versions, thus making additional functionality for a different version being questionable.

Junon Wrote:Not as such ridiculous combinations, and something as complex as Street Fighter. But perhaps, a happy medium. Such as being able to use 3 Photon Arts Per weapon and stringing those together in succession?
Players are already capable of completely annihilating monsters... this would just make characters far too over-powered, and it would not be fair to rangers and forces. The limit is there for good reason... Sega was trying not to have yet another dominant class like in all the versions of PSO. (Hunters for V2 and before, Rangers for everything afterward).

Junon Wrote:I dunno, perhaps I was hoping for too much from this game...? The issues I have with the game are mostly negligible, and can most likely be fixed through patching and updates. E.G; Graphics fix, more Photon Arts and more Clothes. But why should I have to wait for it to be fixed? The game should come ready, 100% completed - not to be worked on after release.
There's two things to consider here... First, Sega's general laziness... second, the life-span of PSU. The game wouldn't last as long if they gave us everything offline has and put it online immediately. Thus, deal with it. I would've liked to see more clothes too, and I'll cuncur that there should've been more at launch, especially considering how much the bloody things cost anyways. XD

My guess about the graphics issues they're addressing was probably something created from lack of proper beta-testing. It could've been worse at least, so count your blessings.

Over-expectations is never good either... take the game from a fresh-slate whenever you get a new one and don't let past biases interfere.

Junon Wrote:Also, without causing offense, I dont think you are able to fully comment on the playability of the game entirely, as you have not experienced online play - the main aspect of the game.
I have every right. All the comments you've made towards the game have come from things I can experience directly anyways, even without the online content. The one thing I couldn't comment on was the sluggish keyboard response, so I didn't comment on it. I have just as much right as anyone else to express my opinion so thus I DO take offense from your comment.

All quotes and long posts aside, the moral of my posts are that in all I have found from the offset PSU to be generally dissapointing.

I played offline mode for around 5 minutes, after several awful cut scenes and shockingly poor voice acting I ceased my offline mode play. I never expected offline play to be any good anyway, they should have not wasted their time and just made the game online only. I'd say at minimum, 90% of the people who bought PSU havent even bothered with the offline mode.

Surely you must admit that having not played online (the games main selling point) you are unable to comment on PSU as a whole? - this is not directed at you as some kind of insult, as I never said you could not express your opinion - So there is no need for you to take offense. This is merely a discussion.

I admit I have not experienced offline mode in it's entirety either - but from what I have sampled, I don't feel I'll be missing out on anything special. Online play is the main reason I bought this game (along with pretty much everyone else who bought it) which I have found to be a dissapointing experience to say the least.

There are loads of other issues I have with the game in online mode too, such as the stupid stupid stupid simple mail, the random dissapearing walking figures in the main cities, and the fact solo play online doesnt appear to be an option, but you get the general gist of my opinion of the game.

I'm not sure what everyone has against the voice acting... it is perfectly FINE... you've obviously been babied by other games that have EXCEPTIONAL voicec acting. It's AVERAGE voice acting, nothing spectacular, but it fits and gets the job done. There's plenty of other games out there made lately that have sub-par voice acting and you WILL be able to see that PSU is fine just from playing them. Also... Story Mode's interesting in its own right and is at least fun... besides... they crack some pretty good jokes from time to time. XD Those who haven't played offline at all really are missing out in the long run... especially when the story related quests come out online... you'll likely be left out of the loop.

I may not be able to comment on PSU as the entirety, but I can comment on the grand majority of it, and choose to do so. I merely took offense to your wording and even as I glance over it again a couple of times now, I still don't much like it.

I'll be able to judge online fully shortly after Christmas time as I plan to get a heaping dose of the online game while I'm still on Christmas break. XD

As for the random walking people within cities... that's just a visual effect that's actually able to be disabled somewhere in the advanced graphics options. I have no idea which option it is... or if anything else will be disabled with them... I just know it's another interesting eye-candy feature. (It's painfully easy to tell who's real and who's not real anyways.)

But, to my knowledge, Sonic Team don't do "Average"... All the Sonic games, NiGHTS, Burning Rangers, Chu Chu Rocket, Billy Hatcher, Samba De Amigo and of course Phantasy Star Online... All of them quality games. PSU just seems to be lacking that finesse which makes you know you are playing a game made by Sonic Team...

-Why should I have to turn the graphics down just so the game is playable?
The game should come ready, working correctly. 10 Frames Per Seccond in areas is pathetic. They did do Beta Testing, so why wasnt this addressed? And why should I wait for a patch to be relased, just to make the game playable? - Not acceptable.

-Why should I buy a control pad, because the keyboard controls are tricky, and there is no mouse support?
The game should readily support the use of a mouse, or at least the option to use it. Not be forced to spend more cash on a control pad to play the game effectively. Same thing goes for the slow response time when typing in game.

-Why should I play a game with a severe lack of content, which I must wait to be released?
The game should already start with content, then updates to follow. They should not have released it half arsed, with only 2 different mission types to choose from, and all characters looking like they have been interbreeding.

-Why should I put up with, as you phrase it, "Segas Laziness"?
I'd expect Sega, but mostly Sonic Team to want to put forward a quality product that they are recognised for.

-Why the crap voice acting?
Subtitles would've been 100 times better, whilst saving them a few quid.

-Why must I exit the game to change any options?
Again this should have been considered and addressed, I would've thought this would have been brought up through the Beta testing.

-Why the poor, un userfriendly menus, microscopic in size?
Again Beta testing should have addressed this issue. Players new to the Phantasy Star series must've had a nightmare!

I can go on for ages. PSU just isnt a quality product we've come to expect from Sega and Sonic Team. It just can't compare to other Online RPG's on the market - Namely World of Warcraft.

Quoting IGNS 5.5/10 review;

Not enough was done to the Phantasy Star Online formula for this newest title in the series to feel fresh. Simply adding new weapons and techniques, changing the environments and adding a few extras such as the bedroom isn't enough when the online RPG has become a fully blown phenomenon. Online RPGs have groomed us to expect to get a vibrant, ever changing world that is full of things to explore and quests to complete. Instead Phantasy Star Universe offers a few hub cities, cookie cutter environments and pointless missions. Even with the addictive qualities, the lack of variety in gameplay makes this one grow old quickly. All of the problems are exasperated on the PC when you look at the flood of other great online RPG’s available on the platform. Simply put, the PC is an online RPG player’s dream. The lesser cousins on the consoles fall short when they get brought over without any improvements.

I still have quite alot of my subscription remaining, and before it runs out I will try to sample the up and coming patch. However, deep down I know I won't be renewing my subscription for it.

I know everyone is going to hate me for slating the latest addition to the Phantasy Star series that we all love. However, I also think a fair amount of people will share my views.

I'm sorry Sad I so wanted to love this game and I was ready to play it for as long as I did PSO, but... this one (In its current state) just doesn't cut it... Sorry guys.

The one thing that's nagging away at the back of my mind is the expert types. Apparently they aren't available offline. So why really am I bothering to level them up, when I just get meager stat increases?

Junon Wrote:I know you can use Photon Arts in the middle of any combo, and that they change in levels, but it's not any real advancement over PSO's system - which is fine and enjoyable in itself, but it feels outdated when used in PSU.

Nonono, you misundestand - PA's can be used to extend a HUnter's standard 3-hit combo, and that extension grows every three levels. Also, we will be getting more PA's for each weapon, at some point. We can just only attach one PA to a weapon at one time.

And how is enemies being able to go flying into the air when you hit not an advancement over PSO's Hard-Hit for minor knockback system?

Hm. That's what I feared Junon...nice to see you again by the way.

I think I'll wait for a lil price drop, just in case I dissaprove as much as you have, if not, more. Can't be wasting too much of those paychecks now haha.
