Probably. You'd just need a Japanese version of the game. They probably programmed the game to automatically go to a pre-specified server... much like on PSOGC where American copies of the game defaulted to the US ships, Japanese to JP ships, and those select few EU copies to EU ships.

Yup! That's all it does really, that's the "Authenticating to Server" step of logging on to play.
