Elysion works well. Hildebear's cane is quite powerful early on.
Generally I'd suggest a Red Saber or Lavis Cannon. Maybe your average double saber. Dunno, never really got that far.

red saber, twin chakrams, morning glory worked ok for me not long ago, double saber, s rank twin if you can go online....
(labis is HU only btw
) my FOmar is just starting to become good at both melee and casting, after a change of mag i remain near max atp, my ATA is now maxed ( suggest Hit% weapons, fomars max ata is really quite low) and my Mst has been boosted a good 200 or so from before, still prefer to hit stuff to casting though.

Pearsonlly I would go for a really high mind mag cause they rock on fomar's. Use one till you get to the later lvls and you have mind maxed out. Then make a all around mag that still allows you to have max mind but other aspects just for fun. I hope this may help you, it worked good for my lvl 200 fomar I had. Forgot go for god minds also they will work very good if he's a pinkal he should be able to get them off nar lilys in vh if I remember correctly, its been a while though.

as for weapons, search for an s rank twin and soul eater. That's about what you'll need for meleeing at your best as a fomar. However, those are some rare dogs, so you might bridge the gap by getting a soul eater, twin chakram, double saber, and definitely g-assassin's sabers. Especially that last one (vhard grass assassins, that's what to hunt). They'll get you by for a long time and they look real sharp too.

or you could have soul banish or s rank scythe. The g assassin sabers are pretty good, I've still gotta find a double saber
