Depends on your version. Dreamcast it does drop, Gamecube and probably X-Box too it doesn't.

What's unfair is the fact that you can spend a long time hunting an uber weapon just to lose it because some monster gets in a lucky strike. It's a good thing they took out the dropping weapons when you die, because I'm pretty certain I wouldn't play at all if that were the case.

did hard mode in search of a few items, found only a PARASITIC WEAR: DE ROL at the 2nd boss, did not found anything more.
did also piping in search of pouilly slime, found one, droped me 2500 meseta, before getting to caves 2 found a RED DAGGER with bad %
also my dreamcast made a reset, meaning there was a bad contact, a little problem that my fingers can solve easilly, no more reset problem (for now)

I can't stop getting dragon slayers, whenever I get them I go mad, I want something else for once.
Also, I finally got round to connecting to online mode today, and I found out they've stopped all online play on PSO, now they only do PSU, grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
