No the project name was Dolphin (this was for the Gamecube). And then once it had been fully created names started flying everywhere like Starcube, Gamecube. Guess which name won

They got the name Dolphin from the internal chips, Geko I think is Japanese for moonlight. Imagine a dolphin called flipper under the moonlight
