Hehe, I'm not saying it's anything wrong with you, it's just part of the general big-headed feeling we get from America, the way that anyone of African origin is instantly 'African American', regardless of whether or not they have any American links at all. Please don't feel I'm picking on you though, it seems so with everything American really.

No the reason that we Americans say that is that if you call someone african in america it is for some reason offensive if they are not. That's why we always say african-american.

The new pope was not technically one of Hitler's Youth though, he was automatically signed up for it once he reached a certain age, but he never supported it or went to the meetings.

Yes he did, back in that time they HAD to go...of else...
He is German, and he was a part of Hitlers Youth...he did NOT however truly belive in Nazism...he merely went so as to not die...
About the African-American, I agree mr shoe...although I say african-american, because it sometimes pisses people off in the forums...and I do not want a flame war to start

Personally I don't think that we should distinguish between races at all but until we get rid of racism there is no way we can help but to specify certain races (if only to speak about what is happening to a particular group).
