Nunchaku controller attachment said to feature accelerometer/motion sensor technology

Following Nintendo's initial Revolution controller unveiling at TGS last year, company execs have variously admitted that not all the next-gen console's secrets have been revealed. However, it seems that the cat's now been let out the bag regarding a second unique controller feature in the form of an accelerometer/motion sensor inside the machine's nunchaku attachment.

Reports first surfaced on the web last week and the rumours were given further credence after website AMN claimed to have spoken to a source close to Nintendo who confirmed the news. Now though, CVG has been informed by another well-placed development source, understandably speaking under strict conditions of anonymity, that the reports are indeed true.

Advertisement:Initially, the notion of a sensor in the nunchaku attachment might seem a little strange, what with the wand-style controller already being fully spacially aware. However, factoring in the nunchaku's ability to sense movement in various direction, all manner of new possibilities arise. Most obviously, in FPS games for example, the secondary controller could be used to look around your environment, alongside controlling movement, meaning the wand would remain free to aim and fire your weapon at all times - imperative for those frantic gun-fights.

As always though, without official confirmation from Nintendo itself, it's impossible to entirely validate the reports. Still, for now we're happy to file this one under "almost a certainty" if not actually "definite", until the company steps forward and reveals all at E3 next month.

Accelerometer.................... sounds... unique!

VERY cool. Man, This just makes me want it all the more! Maybe we'll get to dual-wield swords....Wink

Nintendo Revolution - Arrogantelf - 29-04-2006

Yay so come the end of this year wii can all say that wii are waving our wii-wands at our tvs. great.

Surely using two weapons at the same time but independently of each other would be sooooo awesome but would the game have to be 'on-rails' a-la Time crisis? How would movement be inputted?

Nintendo Revolution - Lee-yoshi - 29-04-2006

Time Crisis is sweet, so there'd be no problems from me Tongue

But the nunchuck attachment has an analogue stick on it, and the remote has the D-Pad Wink

Nintendo Revolution - Arrogantelf - 29-04-2006

Agreed, and slaps own forehead realising his own stupidity.

Of course, the game would not be on rails - shooting those guns, swinging those katanas in two differing directions at the same time. Mind blurrs as he realises just how intense the action WILL be in Wii Fps'.

*OOOH pso=Sange/yasha, any mechs. Dreams of a Wii pso*

If there was ever proof that Nintendo were telling the truth somewhat when they said they wanted Wii to appeal to more than just hardcore gamers then this is it..................

The most recent issue of Time magazine has a reporter hands on with Wii, Playing Warioware, Nintendo tennis and Zelda:TP.It seems from the report that all we want from the wand is true, in Zelda:TP the wand is the sword, is the bow and arrow, is the fishing rod, note the word IS. Sweet. Nice to have this confirmed finally.

This week's issue of Time Magazine should actually be one of interest to many gamers, as it will feature an article by Lev Grossman titled "A Game For All Ages". Turns out that Mr. Grossman actually flew to Nintendo's headquarters in Kyoto, Japan and got some hands-on time with the Nintendo Wii, which will officially be unveiled to the public this week for E3 2006.

In the article, Grossman talks a bit in detail about the functionality of the Wii controller for the forthcoming GameCube game The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. He discusses how the controller can be used for sword fighting, as well as aiming with a bow and arrow and even catching some virtual fish.

But that's not all. Furthermore in the article, Grossman talks about a new WarioWare game coming to the system that has you performing physical functions with the Wii controller to get the mini-tasks done. There's also an unnamed tennis game (Mario Tennis, perhaps?) where the player can use the controller like a racket and swing away at lobs and backhands.

Revo-Europe.com Wrote:Breaking: EGM breaks news of a hidden speaker in the controller, plus a price-point, Twilight Princess tidbits, launch windows for Mario, Metroid & Smash Bros., and screens!

The new issue of EGM Magazine appears to have the scoop on several pieces of information, firstly that the Wii will tentatively be priced at around $249 (that's £134, €117) and will always be online - even when the console is switched off. In suprise news, there is also a speaker in the 'wii-mote' controller - which will make sounds during play.

The virtual console will not have improved graphics for its games (no mention was made of improvements in running speed) and the estimated prices will be "a few dollars for NES, $5 for SNES and $10 for N64". TG16 will have it's 1st party games out at launch, 3rd party will come later as demand increases. The Wii will also apparently have more third-party exclusives than the Cube.

As for Twilight Princess, the game was 80% complete at the time of press, and Nintendo have confirmed the delay was for graphical tweaks, adding Wii functions and because they wanted the game to be measured on a scale of 1 to 120 instead of just 1 to 100!

When playing the title on Wii, you will be able to use the special controller, though sword fighting is still performed with the A button. There are some situations where you will be able to swing the controller to use the sword, but Nintendo found it was too tiring to do it constantly.

The title will be wide-screen, and there are plans for a part of it to be online-enabled (but it won't be a battle mode). Already, the game has more dungeons than Ocarina of Time and more items too. Navi will appear when you play the game on Revolution, but not on GameCube.

Finally, in this barrage of new information, it was confirmed that Smash Bros. Wii would indeed be heading for an Autumn release, apparently along with a brand new Mario title! Could this be the infamous Mario 128 at last? Two new titles - Godzilla and Snoopy Vs The Red Baron, both from Atari - were announced, and it was revealed Metroid Prime 3 would release sometime in 2007.

If this hasn't got you hyped for tomorrow's explosion of Nintendo news, we don't know what will. Oh, actually, we do: scans! Check out Twilight Princess with the new Wii HUD for the first time, and the new Tennis title!
OMG!!!!

How much stuff can this controller actually do?! :S
Excuse me, but i really, really need a wii!

[EDIT] Looks like EGM had even more stuff to say:

I can't help but notice that games such as Super Smash Brothers Online isn't mentioned, aswell as other titles like Sadness (Nibris), but fear not, there's plenty of other games to bask in awe at for the meanwhile! Big Grin

I've also downloaded what i think is the trailer Nintendo have just used at their E3 conference to show off a lot of the games that are mentioned in the list above, but unfortunately due to restraints of both where i am at the moment (Not being able to upload due to lame net speeds!) and where the trailer is located (As in where it's downloaded from - Games Press Access Only) i can't show you lot the trailer (Maybe it'll appear on GameTrailers.com soon or somewhere), but if you wanted to, i can take pictures from it and whack some up here if people would like to see some shots? Smile

[EDIT] Now there are some screenshots for you to enjoy! Any other game you want to see, let me know! (Don't ask why i took a picture of the horsey game! XD)
