Personally I think it is still worth it. I have a lot of fun with the game offline.
You will like it more as you get farther into the game and on the quests and harder modes. 
I am on very hard mode now, but I know when I was back on normal I was kinda bored with it. Trust me it gets better. And I heard that "Ultimate" is awesome!

Well that's good. I think you will like it as you get farther in the game. Yes the weapons and items do get much better as you go along.
