Hi everyone! As Lee knows, I got my play-yan (or play-chan, depending on whose translation you look at) yesterday. It's a small device that lets you play any mp3s or mpeg4s through GBA/GBA SP or DS.

I've included a picture showing all the things I got in the package with play-yan plus media-stage. Media-stage is a surprisingly powerful panasonic format changing tool. It can change almost anything to a play-yan compatable gameboy resolution file. It can ever transfer divx files. The only thing it can't do is quicktime (thankfully very few videos on my pc are quicktime anyway). If anyone is interested in seeing how mediastage works, just ask and i'll post a few screenshots as a tutorial (which might be useful if you're thinking of getting it, as it's in Japanese).

The play-yan unit itself just pokes out a little further than a standard GBA cart, with a headphone jack in the front for higher quality audio. Mp3s are really quite outstanding through this, as good as any stand alone mp3 player or even cd player. The sound of videos can be very good, or not that great, depending on what video quality you just in media-stage. The video quality itself is very good in normal, and outstanding in high quality. Even at the highest settings, the space taken up isn't terrible, because it's only big enough for a gba screen. You can choose the memory yourself, as everything is stored on an SD card that has to be bought separately (I got a £20 512mb model from amazon.co.uk, a pretty good deal). The play-yan itself was £40 from play-asia.

There's probably a lot I missed out, so feel free to ask! Also, if you want a more detailed description of what films/videos I've tried (have gone through a number, cgi, live-action and cartoon) just ask!

P.S. Edit - Those headphones do not come with the device, I was just displaying the mini-jack socket at the front of the play-yan with my cool Hori DS headphones (they're just normal headphones, any headphones will work with play-yan. This lunch time at school, we even had the mini-jack socket going out to an amp, and the quality was still good!).

I certainly looks the biz, and i want one so badly, but i also want to wait for a European release, oh i just dont know, it seems quite expensive as an accessory. ARGH!!

At £40 with no SD card, it is a little steep, though I'm glad I got the slightly more expensive version with mediastage. The quality really is outstanding though, and I can't see why Nintendo wouldn't see the sense in releasing it outside Japan. I have heard rumours that they'll release something for DS that works a littlel ike play-yan, and can also give your DS some more PDA like features.

Yes i've also heard rumours about such a device, maybe being part of a recently registered name such a the V-Pocket?

I cant wait for E3!

I'm certainly enjoying it a lot so far!
When it comes out, I'll also be importing Elektroplankton (it seems like it'll be one game very unlikely to make it out of Japan, so you can expect a mini-review of it in these forums too!

Play-Yan! - God-IX - 24-03-2005

well, I certantly can't play it, but I can read about it, hehe
