Well I'm pulling together a project and I have a few questions:
1. In your own words and in your opinion define anarchy
2. When you think of an anarchist what sort of person comes to mind (not a specific person just your opinion of there general persona)?
If you'd be kind enough to answer these questions I'd be very greatfull

1. Chaos, a total disregard for rules set to keep an area calm.
2. Someone who goes around causing trouble, but not necassarily with bad intentions.

I love that sentence in your blue sig banner. ><

1) The idea of having no leaders, and that everyone is equal. It's a nice idea, but will inevitably lead to chaos and destruction.
2) When I think of an 'Anachist', I think about goth kids who take pride in being 'Anarchists' but don't really know what it means. (My brother for example.)

Faulkie, you sure you don't mean an Antichrist? My wife is a Goth, as are many of her friends, but none of them seem to be Anarchists. I'm not a Goth but I am an Antichrist. Big Grin

1) A society without any rules. This is technically impossible as most people have their own set of personal rules - to have true Anarchy people would have to be prepared to abandon their own moral restrictions. If an Anarchist state existed then you would end up with tribes/cliques/groups who would self govern their own areas thus creating rules. Even a group of Anarchists would end up creating a set of rules.

2) An Anarchist is an idealist. Appearance/social culture (aka Chav, Goth, Hardcore Gamer) will be completely irrelevant to the desires of the Anarchist.

Finally, a genuine interesting thread:

1. Anarchy is, in essence, the absence of any sort of political authority. Corruption is plaguing the people within society, and the people lack direction. Individuals are "free" to do whatever they please, and do not risk punishment for their actions (if required) due to this governmental insufficience.

2. I like how UK Jester described an anarchist as an "idealist." I believe this, also. It's a type of person that obviously supports the idea of an anarchy. To define an anarchist one might look directly at many of today's youth; take their mirror image and you have an anarchist. They are disbelievers of authority, law and government.

I stick by my judgment. Seriously, have you never seen goth kids drawing random anarchy symbols all over the place?

1. An total lack of government, where life is a free-for-all. This could either cause people to live peacefully in harmony, or a bloody murders, theives, and scoundrels. It is the opposite of communism, which is the total lack of government where everyone works together, but may end up in the same two ways. There are no laws in an anarchist area (and there is no such thing as an anarchist "state", nor anarchist "government" because by it being a state, it must have some sort of government; same goes for communism). If someone commits a "crime" though there is no such thing as crime because there are no laws to define it, no retribution will happen, unless the victim/victim's relatives take that upon themselves. That would start a vicious cycle of revenge, which means that an anarchy could only survive when people decide on their own to live peacefully.

2. Some teenage punk who has no idea what he's talking about.

1. an area where there a no rules, no lines to cross, and nothing is ever wrong to anyone (actually impossible because of people's consciences and want for revenge. also, as soon as people realise that there are no rules they will do anything they want, so some people may become mass murders, thus killing off their fellow anarchists, and no anarchist would do anything about it or IF someone did do something it would cease to be an anarchy.)

2. you cant, its the mindset that counts.
