Xbox Symbol Chat question

Hi all
I have recently returned to Pioneer 2 via Xbox live; I previously played live on the Dreamcast.

On the DC you had the option to assign one of chat symbols to a direction on the controller's D-pad for quick access. Do any Xbox users know how to assign symbols to the Xbox D-pad? I tried last night but was unable to assign anything other than text. How do I switch between the video keyboard, the pre-made PSO questions, and the symbol chat?

I thought it was just to press L or R to cycle through them, but this doesn't seem to work. Am I missing something? (I also can't select symbol chat from the standard "Y" button chat menu)

I also used to play on the DC and am now playing on Xbox live and I can't figure out the symbol chat either... What is going on!

Unless the XBox controller has some sort of 2nd analog stick, I don't think so. (I'm on gamecube)

I've sorted it now, its the blue button i think, to toggle between keyboard, standard and symbol chats. Glad thats cleared up then.
