From what I've learned, Ska is basically skate music.

Ska actually began down in the carribean islands or there abouts in the 19??'s or something. NOW i dont listen to old ska stuff like that.... nowadays we have whats called Punk-ska, rock-ska. different names. Its actually just Ska really because Ska back in the 19??'s never really made it and Ska was thus reinvented into what it is nowadays. so ill just refer to it as ska in here.
It's actually music just centered around Drums, Bass, Vocals, and yes they have guitar but if u listen to alot of it you can tell its not centered around the guitarist. its very uplifting music and you really dont tend to run into a sad ska song. Very good music in my opinion. some bands to check out include: Goldfinger, Catch 22, The Aquabats, Reel Big Fish, The Littlest Man Band. It is also NOT skateboarding music. True maybe a few skateboarders listen to it... but what you tend to skateboard is called 'Indie'. And thats what should be refered to as modern rock.

I'm none too nuts about indie, but I can respect it. And hm. Well, that's a new take on things. I was unaware of this. Hey, then again, I should never believe things fellow New yorkers here say. They're all ignorant idiots here anyway.

Hm. Ska. I now have more respect for it, but it's still not the kind of stuff I'm in to.
