All day I have been trying to connect to PSO (Gamecube) only to get the message saying there may be maintinence. Is it temporarily down or something? Normally my conncetion is fine but today and even yesterday it's not been connecting!
It did connect once today but it was unbearibly slow and I couldn't get past the ship screen!

From what i can find theres no word on any of the Phantasy Star Online websites, Sega-Europe, or Sega-America, apart from what i've found below:
Nintendo Gamecube
There may have been maintenance between 14:00 - 16:00 (Japanese Time) on March the 19th, but they have replied saying the works have been finished to last up until March 26th when you mite experience some difficulties again, but nothing major and you should be able to connect and play as always...
March 26th after 22:00 (Japanese Time) you may again experience difficulties connecting to the servers, but this only affects players of Phantasy Star Online, Episodes I & II for Nintendo Gamecube (Players of Phantasy Star Online, Episode I & II Plus will not be affected). This should be for a temporarily small amount of time.
Xbox
From March the 26th, Episode II, Challenge Mode 2 will be uploaded to the servers, along with Hamani decorations (Until April 5th). Therefore you may experience some difficulties between now and then. This only affects players of Phantasy Star Online, Episodes I & II for Xbox.
Thats all i can say, if i find anything else, i'll let you know!
[EDIT] You didn't specify which console this is for, and if i had thought about it, i could have checked your profile, but i didn't and consulted the Xbox PSO sites anyway.

Lee's right, besides, it'll be a while before pso I & II is taken down. Especially if there has been recent maintenance.
This could mean:
-Line is busy
-Your ISP network is underoing maintenance and cannot currently connect you (This usually lasts 8-24 hours)
-Your modem/broadband may need to be re-inserted into your gamecube or your phone jack/ethernet cable may not be inserted into your jack [Or if you have a connecting cable] tightly enough
If problems still consist, just let us know and I'm sure one of us can help you.

And thank god for that!!
Still rocking pso on GC and BB...on that server that everyone knows about.

I'm no expert when it comes to translation of Japanese text, but i have come across this from the Gamecube
Phantasy Star Online, Episode I & II Japanese website. Basically i think it just means that on March 30th, you may experience difficulties accessing some, if not all of the servers in certain regions between 9:00am and 9:10am (Japanese Time). It wouldn't affect people who are already playing online though.

* There is no influence in the customer who already is in the midst of connecting.
* Usually sort it can do Internet connection certification and the purchase of ハンターズライセンス.
We put annoyance in the customer and there is no excuse but
Beforehand that acknowledgement, we ask.
