ISP and ethernet questions...
#1
I got a broadband adaptor for my 14th birthday yesterday, but so far have not succeeded in getting it online. ive tried connecting it with an ethernet cable but that didnt work, and after searching around on the internet ive found that i may need an ethernet crossover cable to get it to work, is this true? also, i wanted to know if my broadband ISP will work with phantasy star, and if they do, is there any extra costs? my broadband ISP is NTL:Home. If it helps, the exact pieces of equipment i have at the moment is : a gamecube, phantasy star online eps I and II, a broadband adaptor, a PC ( i dont know if the PC matters or not, thought id better put it in as it uses an internet connection), a NTL:Home modem( sorry, i dont exactly know what kind of broadband modem it is...) and an ethernet cable ( my mum is going to buy me an ethernet crossover cable tomorrow if it turns out that i need it) please help!

Hi Calum,
Check out my thread on the messageboard just below yours. It took about 4 days to get on line. In the end I got some good advice from Sol (its all under
my thread (BT Broadband help please). I bought a modem router with an inbuilt modem for GBP60 from Maplins (etec was the maker) with a single USB and 4 ethernet ports. I connected the USB to my PC with a spare cable I had at home and set up the modem router via my PC following the instructions in the booklet. I then used a normal (not crossover ethernet cable) to connect to the gamecube and presto hey!! I got online. Now it works fine. However, I could not have done it without Sols invaluable help.

Hey Calum i just got your email, i think the easiest way for you to setup your gamecube and get online would be:

1. turn off your modem at the socket.
2. unplug it from your pc.
3. Remove the cable that connected your modem to the pc.
4. Connect the 'straight' (non-crossover) ethernet cable to your modem and the other end to your gamecubes broadband adapter.
5. Turn on your modem at the socket.
6. Turn on your gamecube, start up PSO and setup the connection by selecting 'DHCP' from any menus (i know this will work as im also on ntl)
7. Hey presto! You should now be able to connect to the pso servers (once youve bought a hunters license) and start playing

Let me know if this helped..

if your modem plugs in the back of the Pc via USB then you need a network card and a crossover eathernet cable from the network card (10/100TX compatible.) to the Cube. . If this is the case the Pc will need to be turned on and connected to the net. if it doesnt follow the advice above

Hi Neo,
I bought a crossover cable from PC world for GBP15 and it did not work. In fact it caused my whole system to crash. However, with a normal ethernet cable (i.e. non-crossover) my system works (hurrah!!!). There were four days of frustration in the middle, however, and a lot of swearing.
Probably everyones system is different. Its a good job that PSO is such a great game otherwise I would have given up on day two. Its a shame that the BBA does not come with better set up instructions for the technically challenged (like me). Its far from being plug in and play.

when you go online with your pc you will be able to check any emails that people have sent you while you were playing pso.
