Sorry to hear that DM. Happened to me and it wasn't my fault. Tried connecting to server when they were down (broken not maintance) and it DCed me before it finished saving. Stupid Sega.
Anyway, for me, deleting the guild card file is just as horrific as losing my characters. I'd much rather lose all my items (and maybe even chars) as long as I can keep the guild card file.

Ok, so it's saying your entire core memory save is trashed? Try this method also...
Take a second memory card and load up PSO with the second memory card, plug the memory card that's amlfunctioning in the Second Card slot then progress to a mult-offline game
Load up a character fro mthe first memory card then try and access the croupted memory card's characters.
There is a warning to all this, This is just something I heard the other day and it my not work, but it might give you access to your items on that memory card so you can transfer them all over to the other memory card so as to not lose them.
Then save and exit the mode and turn off te game cube,
Then move the Corrupt Card back into card slot 1 and power back on and see if that helped fix it.
