For the most part, they were. It just doesn't seem apparent if you don't read the whole page (read more than just the last few posts)

sometimes, they just see something and decide to incorperate it or use it in a game. Maybe one of the Sonic Team member's children was colouring something and he/she got the idea.

They were just having fun with the idea, Orphen wouldn't be caught going off topic anyways, or at least not for a box of crayons.
