Team X-Link recently added to their website that they may very well be supporting the Nintendo DS for Online play if Nintendo decide to take the new handheld in the same direction as the Nintendo Gamecube and produce LAN, instead of WAN enabled games. Below is the statement from their website:

We're gonna be supporting the new Nintendo DS handheld console on Kai. The DS has a built in 802.11b network adapter, which means that people with a wireless-enabled router will be able to play their DS games over Kai. We still don't have full details regarding Nintys own online plans for this console, but I would expect the usual chunk of games with 'LAN but no online' - so we'll just see how it all pans out.

If this means that a Phantasy Star game does come out for the Nintendo DS (As we all hope there will be), there's an even greater chance of it being online accessible. ^_^

X-Link appears to be following the same direction as WarpPipe, known for their LAN/WAN conversion techniques on Nintendo Gamecube titles such as Mario Kart: Double Dash, and are currently campaigning to get forthcoming title StarFox 2: Armada LAN Capabilities.

For more info, why not visit Team X-Link or WarpPipe's websites?
