Because they thought older computers would see the 00, think it's 1900, and crash.

they thought the computers weren't programmed correctly so that all the times and stuff in the internal computer clocks would crash, or something like that.....
Too legit to quit.

My uncle ran around for weeks saying that the world was going to end. He stockpiled on bottled water and canned food for days and kept telling me and my grandparents we should build a basement and stuff like that...and when nothing happened...he tried to save face by saying "I told you nothing would happen, you were all worried for nothing!" --_-- that man never ceases to aggravate me

lol....y2k was the a very stupid event.....we even have this guy in town that we call "Y2K Bob" mainly bc he stockpiled pretty well everything.
I on the other hand thought it was a complete bunch of bs. As far as the computers go.....seeing 00 and "thinking" its the year 1900 and crashing....is just plain bullshit....computers wouldn't crash bc it suddenly went backwards in time....computers weren't made to think at all. So the people that thought of that idea should return to their nice white rooms, and leave the real people to their daily lives.
