Amplifiers are used in conjunction with one of Four shields, depending on which amplifier it is.
Red Barrier - Foie, Gifoie, Rafoie, Amplifier of Red
Blue Barrier - Barta, Gibarta, Rabarta, Amplifier of Blue
Yellow Barrier - Zonde, Gizonde, Razonde, Amplifier of yellow
Recovery barrier - Resta, Anti
Using the correct amplifier when the barrier is equipped will changed it into a new barrier. Red barrier + Foie, for example will create a Foie Merge.
These Merges Increase the named technique up a certain %, although i forget how much now. the recovery ones doubles the named techs range. i think.

Ah thats the one. I had a red barrier once, before the horrible moment I pulled my card out as it saved. Goodbye 1/3,900,000 chance combo of rares.

So an amp on its own does nothing?

Yes. When you own the amplifier and the matching barrier, the Use option on the Amplifier is enabled and you use it, and it creates a barrier with spell enhancing properties.
On its own, useless, just bank it.
