Right. I have recently bought PSO for the GameCube Smile . I want to know if I can get online. My ISP through my PC is AOL(not broadband) and I have read that you cant get online with AOL. But, when I used to play on the dreamcast I had no PC and no ISP. So my question is, if I just buy a modem adaptor and plug the gamecube straight into the phone socket (like I used to with the dreamcast) will i be able to get online? :S

Yeah, you should but you'll have to set everything up and buy a whole different HL. I think if you have AOL modem there's no problem. Im not sure if this 'rumor' of AOL Broadband not working with PSO broadband is true though.

Good luck getting online! Which episode you got btw? AOL is america so I thought I'd ask since pso 3 is out now...I have both games btw.

it is impossible to get online with AOL. I have it i know, i need to use a friends email address/password whos on earthlink. Just find a friend who trusts you enough to lend you is email address and password, thats all youll need, as far as setting up your HL, it doesnt matter if youre AOL or not, its just during the process of signing in that you need another name.
PSO is a game of my past but those I came in contact with are still a part of me.

Its online completely as far as i know. And AOL isn't America only Ivan! Tongue

Basically if you've got AOL as your ISP, no matter what service, you're not able to play PSO online. However, u can if you borrow your friends ISP details as Lionheart said if theyre not on AOL. Either that or you subscribe to a different ISp either at the sametime, or just dump AOL altogether, and go with another ISP.

That is incorrect.

It is possible to use AOL Broadband with PSO, just not directly.

Taken from Tavia's guide at PSOW:

Quote:02Q: What ISPs (Internet Service Providers) work with PSO, and how do I get them to work?

02A: In theory, all of them. A lot of people will tell you America Online does not work with PSO, but that is not true. It does not work with it directly, and, assuming that you have a Windows PC, you will have to set up Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and buy the necessary components. For Windows XP, this is impossibly easy. For Windows 98 SE (Second Edition), it is a bit more complicated, and if you have anything older (Windows 98 First Edition, Windows 95), unfortunately, you will not be able to do it. If you are in charge of your ISP account, it's recommended that you get something other than AoL, such as Earthlink. You can also find a huge, unbeatable list of ISPs here, known as "The List". There's more than enough room to pick and choose, but ideally, you want to avoid something that makes you run proprietary software in order to connect, like America Online, CompuServe, and so on. You will not be able to use any ISPs like those without setting up ICS and using your computer as a server. If you have a standard ISP like Earthlink or BellSouth which does not require any software to be run in order to connect, you should be able to fill in your generic information in PSO's setup and connect just fine. If you have no choice as to what your ISP is, are currently using something like AOL, and are willing to set up ICS...

They then go on to explain how to set-up ICS on various OSs, but it seems a bit rude to put the full explanation here, when its creator made it for PSOW.

I know the topic creator is on 56k, but I was responding to the false statement by a staff member saying AOL won't work on any service. Where do you get your information from? o_O

The truth of the matter is as follows:

1) AOL will not work with the Modem (56k) service.
2) AOL will work in most cases with a broadband connection if the user has Windows on their PC and is willing to set up ICS.
3) [rant]Some of you need to stop posting guesses when someone asks for tech support and only post if you actually know what you are talking about. If you must increase your post count then please do it in a less important section, where your advice doesn't influence people's decisions regarding ISPs/equipment that could end up costing them money![/rant]

Thanks for the information. I agree members shouldnt post to raise their counts and perhaps some members do try to respond even when their knowledge of the subject is somewhat limited. However when someone is asking for help any feedback is welcome. Thats what a forum is for. The person can then make their final decision based on this feedback.

Also, AOL will work with the Modem (56k) service. ICS works fine with dial up or broadband.
