Why did Sega discontinue (Give up) on the Dreamcast and the Sega saturn?

Companies sell consoles at a loss and make the money back through games and the problem was because sony stole the scene so the games weren't selling and they were losing more and more money so to prevent bankrupsy they had to stop.

yeah, it's a real shame, i liked the dreamcast and know someone what still has one and plays it frequently

Saturn suffered because it was hard to program for. So it took a lot more effort to make games for it. And it was too underprowered. Once the PS was released, Sega added another processor to the Saturn to make it more powerful to compete with the PS. But it just made it harder to program for. So there weren't many great games compared to before.
Dreamcast was a lot easier to program for (they learnt their mistakes), made it the first online console, great software support. It failed because people didn't buy it. They didn't advertise it enough, and people didn't want it.
A neat little thing I remember is that it had a game which only cost £5, was online racing, and all proceeds went to charity. I don't see that on any other console

I love my dreamcast. I just finished Shenmue 2 on it which is great. Might go back to Shenmue 1 to get all the toys =).
