you use photoshop right?
neater shading:
once i've base coloured it ( a layer for each section, 1 layer for skin, 1 layer for hair etc) i will go back to the layer i want to shade first and create a new layer just above that and press ctrl+G to group it together (so you can only paint over the original basecolour instead of the entire pic, this helps to be really neat)
Shading:
then i choose a darker version of the basecolour and imagine where the light would be coming from and where the shadows would be, use other pictures to help you out, and spend some time doing it
