That's the problem. The PC has to be on as well, to play the GC online. With routers you don't, but it's more expensive.
An ethernet port is like a normal modem port. Most motherboards and PCs don't come with one. A seperate network card is only £10 and a cable about £3.
I use NTL set-top box which connects to my PC via USB. I then connect my Gamecube to the network card I bought.
