Yes, the armour does suck. But think how cool you look wearing it.
To the new people it looks cool, and you get kudos for wearing it.
To the experienced player, you know it gives useless armour protection. So if you can wear it, and not get beaten around, then you earn kudos that way.
Of course, if you are in the middle, you just think it's stupid hahahaha
