For any dial-up connection you need the modem adapter for the GameCube. Only Cable, DSL, and T1 use the broadband adapter. The cost to play is $8.95 a month in the US, and the cost of the adapter is usually $35. I got my broadband adapter from the belly of the beast. I went to Nintendo World in New York while I was away on vacation and picked it up for $35. I don't know where else you could get one besides EBay though... (I ordered a keyboard adapter from EBay, it better get here soon)
