I'd definitely prefer a Zelda64-esque targeting system over the lousy excuse they have now... but besides that...
IMO the game should save every time you drop a rare item... quite simply, because it would eliminate the need for item deletion in the event of FSOD. Logically, it seems to me item loss through FSOD only happens because, hypothetically, a person could drop a rare and then cut power, thus duping the rare (am I right?). This is the same reason it saves when you drop something you had equipped at the last save (and is the only way I know of to force a save when you get some uber rare you'd like to keep); if it didn't save, the game would have to delete ALL your carried items after FSOD, wouldn't it? So it seems to me that if you had to save when you dropped any rare, the need for item deletion after FSOD would be nonexistant. It's a little extra wear on the memcard, yeah, but considering how often some people get FSODed (even though they shouldn't be hanging in the wrong ships) it would save a lot of people grief. *shrug*
