Yes hard mode gives more exp. It is better to go slowly through hard levels than going quickly through lots of easy levels.
If when you use the special attack it hits a lot, then you could use it if you want. It is up to you. Whether or not you get enough exp from it.
Just keep going through the game and you will find better weapons. I would stay away from using Heat, Freeze, Gush type weapons. I never use them, or at least the special attack.
Busters/saber type weapons generally do more damage than any other weapon.
Knife/dagger type weapons are good for dealing out a lot of damage because you can usually get off a full combo. Using a saber, sometimes leaves you open to attack at the second or third combo. Use daggers for Hidebears, nanodragons, sinows, delsabers. These need lots of quick attacks before they hit you. Especially hildbears, with a saber you can maybe get off one attack, daggers, 2 or 3 attacks.
Lockguns are pretty gun. Decent damage and fairly quick.
