Well, all three pillars have to be activated in one-player offline normal mode for you to have unlocked ruins. You can not do it online, nor can you do it in multiplayer. Activate all three pillars and defeat Vol Opt and you should be able to access ruins.

As for the Soul Eater, there are numerous guides on GameFAQs as to how to get it. I can't remember the exact method though. Sad sorry. But I think it's worth it, especailly for a force.
