Well Nintendo never really owned Rare in the first place, Rareware was just a 3rd party who decided to make everything for Nintendo-side consoles, probabily because most of their games best fit the target audience Nintendo had gained. Nintendo just simply didn't buy them when the time came. According to them, there was nothing new that Rare had to give to Nintendo so they weren't gonna fork over wads of cash to keep them there.
