The original DMC was a masterpiece, the ultimate in anger management. The only game to successfully mix gunplay and swordsmanship well. It's beautiful.
You were right to stay clear of DMC2, it was terrible. They made it more "realistic" which in this case was just plain wrong. They made guns stronger than swords, which made the entire thing frightfully easy because all you had to do was point and shoot.
However, with DMC3 Capcom redeemed themselves. They made it harder, they made your swords and gauntlets your primary weapons again and made even huger and more stylish combos than before.
I think the beauty of DMC is that you get a style rating depending on how cool you look when you're beating the crap out of something.
