In Caves it's smarter to use a Handgun anyway, it keeps you out of range of the Ob Lillies. Plus door fighting is useful to draw annoying enemies like Crimson Assasins to you. On their own they're no real worry but behind a little group of Vulmers they can become a serious threat.
