question about berserk special

FOs CAN do decent damage with their techs... you have to have a decent amount of MST in units, materials and/or mag levels, and have things that boost your techs. For instance, in easy areas, my FOnewm will cast Gifoie a few times, or Gizonde on the appropriate enemies (or I skip right to Rabarta for weak-to-ice enemies). Sorcerer's Cane is among his weapons... and in areas where support is not immediately necessary, he uses a Red Merge. So his max technique boosts are:

Gifoie: 30% class boost (IIRC) + 20% Red Merge boost + 20% Sorcerer's Cane Gi-level boost = +70%
Gizonde: 30% class boost (IIRC) + 20% Sorcerer's Cane Gi-level boost = +50%

This combined with decent MST (I have yet to use all the mind mats I need on him) makes for good enough damage for him not to, as I've heard one person put it, "cancel like a mofo" in most cases.

But again, in areas like Ruins/CCA/Seabed I'll usually stick to Resta Merge and Striker of Chao (curse the lack of a male-FO-equippable resta boost weapon! >_<). I just don't go to those areas much yet because his defense really isn't good enough to take them on yet. I'm going to wait till I can put his Smoking Plate on before I seriously attempt to play these areas (I've been there before with him, just not often).
