True Jarl, but at high levels you never need a Ra to help you 'status' enemies if you are an android hunter because you have so many traps. What if I run out, surely then I need a ra you say? No, I just need another android hu with even more traps. Traps are amazing, all bow down to the mightiness of confusion/ice traps! (Traps have a 100% success rate at their allocated task and a wide range)
And as for what you said, A.S. if one fo isnt enough to support a team why not use two instread of one ra and one fo? But, anyway, I find actually yes one fo is easily enough to support a whole team. It's not like they have to run around screaming "ZOMG now j00 need healzor, and now you!!!" because at higher levels again their resta radius is gigamungous and if placed correctly they will be fine for healing everyone at once (Unless you get a "L0l guyzzz I can totally pwn 0n m3h own l00k! OMGZ... I am ded... Raise, Ra1seeee!!!" - Runaway 'I can take em all' class player).
So, then you say, well if you only need one fo then surely have a ra to? Noes I pic three hu and a fo every time. We need the damage output! So then you say "Well what about someone who stuns the enemies and gives your team time to react in melee?" - Melee weapons do that to. Use a sword or a partisan to find out the magical truth that yes, hu weapons stun enemies to! And they can do more than one enemy at once, just like a ranger can! ZOMG! So then people say "Well... Hu's don't have the support powers the ramarl has- " Thats why I said abov e to use a fo! Aaaaarghhhh!!! *goes clinically insane*
The rooms are so small generally I find that even if range is needed a hu with a pair of mechs can do the job easily.
^ And if the entire above arguement fails, charge vulcs pwnz j00. I know, you don't want to resort to them. They are lame and they suck and any n00b can get a pair but unfortunately yes ST accidentally made the ra class totally, utterly, redundant in multiplayer online.
The only uses I can see left for ras are:

So there you have it. Meh. I want to ask the more senior players if they can still validate rangers. I don't want them to be redundant it just seems that way to me. Maybe I'm wrong, in fact yeah I probably am. My specific game knowledge rotates around avoiding hax0rs so I know a little less about stats n' all.
As for the melee fonewearl I have to agree with you A.S. demons is probably the best way to deal effective damage there (provided you have the ata - use a hit weapon) But then you said to use a raygun A.S. ? Correct me if I am wrong but I do not think that counts as melee
