You make one character that you can walk around with in lobbies and such forth.
Before you start a battle, you select what deck of cards you want to use. THIS is what is Hero/Dark, NOT the character you walk around with. You can have numerous decks on one character. This means you can have hero AND dark on one character.
The only time this is not the case really, is offline story mode. In this case, you can only choose the decks, depending on what story side you have done. ie Choose Arkz, and you can then only select Arkz for the rest of story mode.
In summary, the character you make and walk around with, does NOT affect what decks (hero or arkz) you can use.
Obviously, every side has it's advantages and disadvantages. That force you talked about. She only affects monsters and does not heal damage already done to characters. So to make the best use of her, you have to team with another Arkz.
