Chapter 3 – The Mechanics of the Forest
Pink watched the creature she just saved run off into the forest, keeping a close eye on her until she was completely out of sight. Strange creatures these… humans… are. Clumsy too, getting caught so easily. She looked down upon the male human she had just slain in order to save the female human’s life. They’re rather weak too. She knelt down and decided to look through his equipment to see if he had been carrying anything useful.
“What’s this?” she exclaimed as she looked curiously at a sheathed blade by the human’s side. She picked the blade up and examined it closely, sliding her claws along the edge. Slight sparks jumped as her claws grinded against the blade. This blade happened to be a Sange, and to her unfortunate surprise, it wasn’t in very good condition.
She decided to take a moment to sharpen the blade using her claws, slight sparks continuing to jump, growing less numerous as the blade’s edge became finer, and sharper. This may come in handy in a pinch.
The sun had descended overhead, and the stars were starting to appear overhead. I wonder what that strange female human wanted. She seemed out of place here. Everyone else I’ve seen in this area wore uniforms, while she wore more casual clothing and that red bow… After investigating the dead human a bit more, finding nothing useful to her, she discarded the body into the dark trees and took the Sange and its sheath with her. Let’s see what these humans are up to in my home.
She had been investigating this particular human structure for quite some time, never actually entering the inside of it. She knelt low to the ground and carefully made her way to the entrance, leaning her head into the light-enveloped entrance.
Inside all she could see was a large, unadorned hallway. It was a fairly, roughly put together structure, with the original steel beams being used as a ceiling. Many different paths were strewn about the hall in front of her, but there seemed to be no activity. I guess now is a good time for some investigating… and if I disapprove… a bit of demolition! She ran straight into the hallway, the only sound she made was the tiny clink of the tips of her lower claws hitting against the steel flooring. Anything important will likely be in the centre of this structure. Her goal being the centre, she ran as swiftly and as silently as she could in order to avoid detection.
She stopped abruptly as she came across what looked to be a map on the wall. Gazing at it carefully she looked at the various stations listed on it. Security offices… likely don’t want to go there. Administration… that probably wouldn’t be a good idea either. Utility… that’s highly uninteresting. Biological and psychological experiment area… I’d better investigate; they may be tampering with fellow creatures of this planet! She quickly memorized the safest way to reach the experiment station and set off at a quick pace down more of the bland hallways.
As she ran deeper within the human structure, she started hearing very unusual noises. The sounds of grinding gears and active mechanical belts began filling the hallways. More and more branches lead to offices and storage rooms. One particular room caught her eye though. Food storage… well… I am a fair bit hungry… She crept up to the door and peeked inside the window. Two guards… this should be easy enough.
Watching the guards within the small room carefully, she slide the door open enough to squeeze in, and shut it carefully behind her while their backs were turned. She quickly slid behind a group of food crates. She knelt in the darkness there, keeping her eyes low so they would not reflect the light. She patiently waited for one of the guards to walk near her position. When one of the guards passed in front of her, she leapt out of her darkness and dug her claws into his shoulders, easily piercing his armour, and she sunk her fangs into his neck. She quickly released, letting him drop with a thud to the floor and she spit out the blood in her mouth while quickly running for the second guard who was trying to escape. He was getting a bit too close to escaping so she decided to take out her new Sange and throw it at the escaping guard. The sword quickly pierced through his abdomen and he fell to the floor, blood leaking out onto the floor.
Once the guard was clearly dead, she walked up to him, pulled her sword free, and cleaned the blade on the guard’s pants. Sheathing the Sange, she licked her lips and went to look inside the nearest food crate. Inside the crate was an enormous stock of fruits. Apples, bananas, pears, peaches, and grapefruit were all crammed together within the crate. I think I’ll grab a bite to eat before moving on. The security here seems to be rather poor; they must still be working on this structure.
With a smile, Pink scooped up a few different fruits and decided to make a feast of it. Gobbling down several apples and bananas and a few others somewhat quickly because of her situation. After getting her fill, she decided to take a storage bag from one of the guards and fill it with food. No point in wasting good food! She filled the bag as much as she good before it would become troublesome to carry then peaked out into the hall and set out for the experiment station again.
She was rather close to the station after leaving the food storage room, and after taking only a few turns, having to check another map along the way, she reached what looked to be the entrance to the experiment station. She poked her head around the corner very carefully so as not to be spotted, and quickly assessed the situation. I can see where all the security is now… it’s pretty heavily guarded. There might actually be enough of them to cause me some serious harm. She quickly checked around for any other possible entrance into the main room, spotting an air duct towards the top of the wall just above her head. It’s a bit cliché… but why not? Bending down, and pushing off the ground with great force, she leaped up to the air duct and dug her lower and upper claws into the wall so she would not fall. She quietly removed the metal covering of the air duct and climbed inside, replacing the covering as she entered it.
Her keen eyes allowed her to see quite clearly in the darkness of the vent. She crawled her way along, taking the turns she thought would most likely lead her to the main room. The light hum of a far away fan could be heard as she made her way, a slight clink being made from both sets of her claws. Coughing a bit from the dust rising into the air, she kept moving until she spotted a patch of light nearby.
Her prediction was indeed correct as she looked down into the massive room below her. Strangely enough there did not seem to be any sign of human activity in the room. Most of them must have gone to sleep…
She slowly climbed out of the vent, setting the metal covering within the air duct this time and she dropped to the floor far below her, breaking her fall a bit by somersaulting upon hitting the ground.
The room she was in was absolutely enormous. All along the outside rim of the walls there were what looked to be pods filled with creatures. A green substance filled each pod and the creatures remained motionless. A large electrode was also attached to each pod, and the cord from the electrode made its way to a gigantic computerized electrical supply that was attached to the ceiling. There was also a large gate at the far end of the room it looked to be used for transferring objects of incredible size. There must have been a few hundred pods scattered along the walls. Some were large, some were small, but they were all filled with the green liquid and they all had the electrode attached on the top. What the heck is going on here?
