Exactly, that is another reason that I asked: If the first method I mentioned is the way it works, then four characters are plenty enough to try out all the combinations (make each character a different race, and try out all three classes/types on each character) -- the only reason you'd need more is if you're really into roleplay and want to make more than one of each race, or if you have more than one person playing with that account and more than one person wants a character of the same race.

Save for subjobs, which are a different thing altogether, this is how FFXI works ~ start out as Black Mage and get to 10, then you switch to Warrior...no matter how long it was since you were last in Black Mage, when you do finally switch back, your level 10 is still 100% intact.
Not that I want it to be a repeat of FFXI, but...I hope this is how it works, rather than the one overall level stat.
