--Yes, a poem. "If" by Rudyard Kipling. "If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you..." I nearly cried when I heard it recited on the radio, and I was only about 11 back then.

--Ah, you ask such a difficult question. Shall I give a detailed answer? ... Okay, I shall.
For personality, if such a thing applies: has self-esteem, talented (even if it isn't in magic!), has a loyal and trustworthy disposition, is kind and considerate, has a sense of humour, knows when to be serious, preferably not evil (but if he must be evil, so be it. ^^).
For looks: should be or appear to be(!) aged 18-30, sensibly dressed (I dig robes/cloaks/headgear/mage weapons), tallish (height >170cm will do nicely), physically attractive in the eye of this strange beholder. XD
