I agree your not insane. Your child raising methods are very similar to that of the jedi's from star wars. The jedi's aren't crazy.... or are they?

How to be a "Jedi"
1. Take random young children from there parents claiming there "special".
2. Forbid them to have emotional attatchments.
3. Teach them how to fight and use the forse.
4. Lather, rinse and repeat steps 1-3
