Actually I've tested that theory offline... it is MUCH better to just use a grinder with the same letter category as the weapon you're trying to grind. The more expensive grinders have no, or so little effect on success rates that it is EXTREMELY unprofitable and generally useless to use higher ranked grinders on lower ranking weapons. This is assuming it's the same online, but I don't see why it wouldn't be.
What I DO find though, is that higher ranked weapons are less likely to break than lower ranked weapons.
Finally... if you want to have the best chance of making a strong weapon... wait until a day when you have a level 3 luck rating, just to be even safer when going beyond three or four grinds.
I'm not 100% on a lot of that due to not playing online yet, so if I'm off on any of the info feel free to correct me... I'm merely making assumptions and educated guesses for the most part due to Sega's habit of code-recycling.
