Reverse engineering would require both analyzing and modifying.
And actually no you don't own your own save files. If you were caught trying to sell a save file on Ebay or something you could be sued because the memory is actually owned by the people who own the software which generated it. Even if it wasn't stored server side, still illegal. That's why Datel have been through some bad law cases. Especially when they tried to release codes for online games for the "Action Replay" (Mainly, of course, for our beloved phantasy star online)!
It does suck that they wouldn't pay you any heed snowfox. But still, they got to you quickly enough. Maybe a GM spotted you? You know in the entire time I played PSU I never saw a GM once.
