It wasn't harsh, it was just the truth. I believe Karl Marx said it best:
The dominating classes in any society use religion to justify the suffering of the dominated. They also use it to show that the suffering will be rewarded in the non-existant "afterlife".
The dominated, seeing no easy way out of their situation, likely agree with this. They believe that they will be rewarded and thus their own lives do not seem as bad.
Or, radical factions among the opressed twist religion to their own purposes for resistance, claiming that one day a "God" will save them from opression, or that the opressed in the afterlife will become the dominant ones.
The very nature of religion is, yes, to explain the unexplainable. But also to justify that which should not be justified.
By the very fact that not all religions are the same, and by the very fact that religion exists most everywhere in some form, we can see that it is hypocritical and little more.
People will believe what they want to believe, not what is most likely. Myself I find this rather absurd, I could never force myself to believe in that which is obviously the invention of mans mind.
As for faith? People say I lack faith. But all faith means to me is blind following. So yes, I lack the desire to blindly follow. Making a positive word for a negative condition of the mind will not save religion!
Speaketh my brother! Say it loud, say it proud!....
This isn't turning into a relgious debate, we're merely saying, to justify your....horribly, horribly concieved, weed induced theory of the world is null and void because you thought it up. It has no basis. God has more of a valid claim to being right because millions of people believe in it... =/
