The Guardians, otherwise known as the Online Story Missions and located at the front of the desk on the Colony fifth floor, are by no means the only way to play. The best way to find other missions is to just look around the Colony fourth floor.
Assuming you entered the fourth floor from the ramp up from the third floor, on the right-hand wall are the Linear Line (The lime-green gate furthest back from the floor ramps) and the Reserve Port (The dark blue gate that's behind you at this point). These gates lead to the Unsafe Passage and Dark Satellite missions respectively.
Situated on the left-hand wall are the Flyer Gates to each of the three planets, Parum, Neudaiz, and Moatoob. Assuming you're facing them, they are situated, from left to right, thus: Parum (Light blue gate), Moatoob (Orange gate), Neudaiz (Purple gate). From there, it's a simple matter of exploring the planets. Generally, you can accept missions on planets from the Flyer Bases, which are easy to pick out.
There's also a mission you can accept from the Moatoob Guardians Branch, called Bruce's Dungeon. This mission gives excellent Mission Point and Meseta rewards. However, the monsters there are extremely difficult for the play level, and you are required to have grouped up with someone before attempting the mission.
Note that once you've visited a floor on the Guardian's Colony, or a District, Shop or Guardians Branch on a planet, you can travel straight to that area when you leave your Room.
As for a strategy, I would recommend avoiding the HIVE (Dark Satellite and further) until you easily outpower most of the enemies there. Even at level 50, I find that doing even HIVE C missions is pretty down-to-the-wire. Unsafe Passage C and its follow-up from the goal lobby, Fight for Food C, are easy missions to play at your level (which I'm assuming is around 2 or 3), and a lot more fun if you have a party.
At about level 5, I suggest travelling to Parum, getting a party together with friends, and taking on Mad Creatures C and some of the follow-up missions. Note that at this point you qualify for Unsafe Passage and Dark Satellite B, but unless you want to die horribly (Since the monsters have a 15 level advantage over you), or make a loss since you expend so many healing items, I recommend avoiding soloing it.
It's a shame you're on X360, or I'd be able to help you out... Ah well. I guess I'll just defer to Reigast or something...
Whew, long post, but it covers pretty much everything you need to know at this level.
Oh, almost forgot: For a free Rising Strike disc, talk to your Partner Machine in your room and play the mission tutorial.
